Expert technicians at JPS have been providing electrical services for over 15 years and can handle any electrical project big or small. This includes everything from the electrical panel where the unit receives electricity from the city to all switches, outlets, lights and other electrical fixtures.
Johnson Power Solutions could provide commercial services to building owners as well as business owners renting the building, who are in charge of the construction and repairs within their own unit. Commercial buildings within our scope include most retail spaces, office buildings, churches, government buildings, warehouses, multiplexes and apartment buildings, some homes converted to commercial use on county land, and many others. There are some buildings we may not service, such as tall skyscrapers, but when in doubt call us and we’ll indicate if we can service the project or not.
Commercial Electrical Services
Commercial electrical services are similar to residential services. In both cases, the building or unit receives power from a transformer to their control panel, which is also called a breaker box. The power is then routed from the breaker box to all switches, outlets and fixtures in the building or unit. While a single family home usually only has one meter and breaker box, in commercial properties it’s much more common to have separate units which are each metered separately and have their own power supply.
In commercial properties the breakers, circuits, switches and outlets installed will often serve higher power requirements than in residential spaces. As described on our outlets page (and circuits), the appropriate outlet and circuit are installed to provide power for the desired appliance. While the most common outlet in residential properties is the 15 amp, 125 volt outlet, commercial properties will often have 20 amp outlets with higher voltage for commercial equipment. Even in a regular office building with no industrial equipment, the hallways could have upgraded outlets to provide power for a commercial-grade vacuum and other cleaning equipment.
The lighting and other fixtures are often larger, and there is often more specialty lighting in commercial properties. Places like jewelry stores and museums would make abundant use of accent lighting. Medical and surgical facilities would have task lighting attached to mobile arms for easy positioning. A commercial electrician would be able to install quite a few of these fixtures. Some fixtures and signage might be installed by other contractors, but the electrician would still run the power to the desired location. As such it’s important to work well with other contractors.
Commercial electrical systems often have more grounding and other safety features than residential. They might have layered surge protection to prevent damage of equipment or loss of data. Whole home surge protection is available for residential properties – the surge protector is installed at the electrical panel. Yet, layered surge protection in commercial properties would have a surge protector installed at the panel and multiple places along the circuit, and possibly built into the outlets. Commercial electrical systems might have an electrical ballast which limits current.
Businesses might think about expenses differently than residential home owners. The home owner certainly wants to reduce costs wherever possible, yet in a business it is also a matter of getting a return or increasing profits. As such they might be even more willing to upgrade the lighting and other electrical features to those which are more energy efficient. Upgrading fluorescent lighting with LED lighting is very common.
