Expert technicians at JPS have been providing electrical services for over 15 years and can handle any home electrical project, big or small. This includes everything from the electrical panel where the home receives electricity from the city, to all switches, outlets, lights and other electrical fixtures.
The information found on other pages on this site, such as wiring, switches and outlets can give you information that would help with the design of your electrical system. When it comes to wiring, switches and outlets, this is mostly a functional design – where do you want the outlets, where do you want the switches, how many do you want and what are the power requirements?
Yet, the design for lighting, is both a functional design AND a visual design. Lighting plays an important role in the décor of your home, and in a business it is directly related to the customer experience, and it can affect sales. Lighting affects the mood of the individuals of the room and is an important factor in setting the desired ambience for that room, whether it be a kitchen, bathroom, living room, shop, show room or any other room in your home or business.
Different Types of Lighting For Your Home Or Business
There are three main types of lighting. Lighting designs can make use of just one type or combine all three, plus include other specialty types. This depends on the activities or events that are held in the room where the lighting is installed.
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting fills the entire space. This is common in classrooms, workshops, hospitals, living rooms and some stores where entire groups of people need good lighting or the entire room needs to be lit.
Accent Lighting
Accent lighting is similar to task or spot lighting in that it is focused and shines on a specific space, but it is not usually as bright and it highlights an object from an angle. It can be used to make a vase, bust, statue, sculpture or painting stand out in a room. This type of lighting is especially present in art galleries and museums, but can also be used in a kitchen, living room, landscape, entry hall, library or study room in a home.
Spot Lighting or Task Lighting
Spot lighting is when a light is focused on a specific area for performing tasks; as such it is also called task lighting. When people hear the phrase “spot light”, they often think of a theater, because theater lighting makes use of this type of lighting during the course of a production. Yet, the same type of lighting is used at places like a desk or a workspace.
Beyond these three main types of lighting, there a few other specialty types that can be used to make a room more fun, or the lighting might be used at a party or dance. This can include laser lighting, dream-like mixtures of colors, disco ball lighting, or projections of stars and galaxies. These specialty types may or may not be provided by an installed fixture. When they are not fixed to the building they are provided by a portable source, like a lamp or projector.
The kitchen is a place in the home where multiple events or functions can occur. It’s where people cook, congregate, converse, and there may even be a desk where an individual would do business at home or pay the bills. Due to a kitchen’s multiple functions, it could easily combine all three lighting types — ambient, accent and task lighting. Accent lighting is often applied in the form of backlighting above and below the cabinets. This is different from traditional accent lighting that highlights one specific object like a plant, but it’s similar in that it has the same effect of adding depth to the lighting and making the cabinets stand out. A kitchen also often has some form of ceiling-mounted fixture along with multiple can lights. The combination of multiple can lights and the ceiling fixture create ambient lighting, but the can lights themselves also provide task lighting for cooking. When two or more lighting types are combined it’s called light layering.
Another factor in lighting design is light intensity, which is measured in lumens. The intensity of the lighting also affects the mood of the room. Higher intensity tends to relate to higher energy, or it’s meant to keep individuals alert and focused. Lower intensity is used to calm the mood. For example, while ambient lighting could be part of the lighting design for a bathroom, a dimmer can be installed to change the intensity of that lighting. So while an individual is preparing for a date they might have the lights up to full, but when they want to relax in their tub they can dim the lights for a more pleasant and relaxed environment. The entire bathroom should have ambient lighting, but accent lighting is common for the bathtub. So the bathroom is another room where the lighting is designed with layering.
Different Types of Light Fixtures
More than providing the different types of lighting mentioned above, the mechanical design and styles of the light fixtures themselves also contribute to both interior and exterior decors. This is just a general list of fixture types; the actual lighting fixtures that you want can be selected from virtually any home store or home supply catalog, and we can install it for you as well as the circuitry and switches for it.
Flush-mount Ceiling Fixtures – These have a mostly whole solid design and may have one or more bulbs; they are installed flush with the ceiling.
Semi-Flush Ceiling Fixtures – These have a piece of the structure that installs flush with the ceiling but also has a piece that hangs from that piece.
Chandeliers – There is a wide range of chandelier design but they generally have places for multiple small bulbs. They can resemble their candle holder predecessors, but not always. Sometimes it’s multiple small pendants.
Pendant Lights – These usually have a long single hanging arm from the ceiling where the lamp or bulb is enclosed in a ball-like or other shaped structure.
Recessed Fixtures – The most common of these are can lights. The end of the fixture is somewhat flush with the ceiling instead of hanging from the ceiling.
Track Lighting – This would have multiple lighting sources on a single track, the lamps can often move along the track and rotate or change angle of direction.
Wall Sconces – These are more common outdoors but can often be found indoors. They have a piece that installs flush with the wall (side-mounted instead of ceiling-mounted). They are often L-shaped and can resemble their candle holder predecessors, but can also have various shapes and arm angles.
Bath Vanity – These are often side mounted and can have multiple different shapes. They often have 2, 3 or even more lamps that can be on a unified track or sconce.
Troffers – These are shaped like a long trough and usually house the long neon bulbs. These are used more commercially than residentially, but can still be found in places like the laundry room or garage.
Portable Lighting – This obviously comes in the form of various lamps (or projectors). It’s not something that we install per se, but if you have a specific location in your home where you would like portable lighting to remain permanently, then we can help by installing the outlet if one does not exist, and/or we can make it a switched outlet, so that you never have to unplug the lamp. You can switch it on or off from the same location as the other light switches, or from an even more convenient location, like above a bedside table.
This is just a very basic list. Lighting design, including both lighting type and fixture type can have a wide range from the very simple to the very elaborate.
Bulb Types
For the purpose of this page we won’t go into a lot of detail on bulb types. Most home and business owners do not need an electrician to replace the bulbs. In some cases the elderly, anyone handicap that can’t climb ladders, super busy professionals, and property management might have us install bulbs for them.
However, there are three main points of mentioning bulbs here briefly.
One, the bulbs with the proper Watts should be installed in their respective fixtures.
Two, bulb manufacturing has come a long way over the last few years, and it is often worth it to install more expensive bulbs that are energy efficient. They often last longer, they produce less heat (good in AZ) and save money on energy costs in the long run. LED bulbs have lower Watts but produce the same amount of light, and can last up to 20 years.
The third reason is the bulb itself can affect your lighting design. Bulbs can come in various colors ranging from bright white to blue shades to brown shades. Blue is a cool color; brown is a warm color; this affects your lighting design.
Ceiling Fans & Other Electric Fixtures
Besides light fixtures, there can be other fixtures in the home or business that are directly connected to the electrical systems, whether it be the main electrical system or a low-voltage system. The most common of these, especially in Arizona homes, is ceiling fans. In the home or business, other fixtures may include smoke detectors, door bells, speakers, cameras, security devices, exit signs, other signs, and more.
As a residential and commercial electrician service, Johnson Power Solutions can install many different lighting or electric fixtures in your home or business, along with the wiring, switches and outlets. In some cases, especially in commercial buildings with specialty fixtures, we may run the power to a specific location while another contractor installs the fixture.
